If you’re hiring a floor installer, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure that you end up with a job well done. 

Is your installer licensed and insured to do this kind of work? 

Knowing if your installer is licensed and insured will indicate whether or not they have taken the necessary steps to conduct their business properly. In order to become a floor installer, you have to be licensed and have specific insurance. Unexpected accidents happen, and it is vital that your floor installer will be covered in that situation. There are so many “what ifs” that apply to floor installation. What if someone accidentally cuts into the electrical wiring in your home? What if someone damages a wall in your home? What if someone accidentally bursts a pipe and there is a flood? Of course, accidents like these are uncommon, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. 

Does the installer offer a warranty for the installation? 

Flooring is an investment. You should absolutely make sure that your installer offers some kind of warranty for the work they will be doing. Their warranty should be valid for a few years at the minimum and should cover floor damage.

Does your installer have references and reviews online? 

Any legitimate floor installer will have a Google Business Listing with client reviews. They will also give you references upon request. To ensure that your floor installer is someone you can trust, it is a good idea to ask for some references and check up on the online reviews. If the public generally has left positive reviews, then you should move ahead with this installer. If not, then it’s time to go another route. 

Ask to see pictures and examples of similar work. 

A legitimate installer’s website should have a link to their Instagram and also include examples of their previous work and some pictures to go along with it. If this is not on their website already, it is okay to ask the installer for some pictures. Flooring is a project that will increase your home’s values, so it is perfectly okay to ask your installer to see some of their work. As a client, you want to feel totally comfortable with the installer and their work so you can trust that you will love your new flooring. 

How long will the job take? 

Always ask how long a floor installation will take. Every installer is different and has a different schedule. The two of you should discuss this schedule and make sure it works for both of you. What time of the day will the installer be in your home? How many hours will they be working at a time? Are you comfortable if they are in your home when you are not there? These are all things you should keep in mind. 

How will the installer handle the cleanup? 

 Ask your installer how they will be cleaning up after installing the floor, or is the cleanup something you should do? 

Does the contractor offer customer care for your floor? 

After the floor is installed, you will need to care for it. The type of care involved all depends on the specific kind of flooring you are getting installed. Ask your flooring installer if they will be providing you with cleaning instructions and overall care. You want to be as informed as possible about your floor so that you can take care of it to the best of your ability. 

How will payment be handled? 

Ask your floor installer how the payment will be handled. Does the installer want the whole payment upfront, before beginning the installation? Do they want half of it first, and then the other half when the project is complete? Every installer is a little different, so you should always ask this question. The two of you should discuss it together so you’re both comfortable with the outcome. Some installers prefer to receive half the payment and the other half later because the overall job could end up costing more or less money in the end, depending on time and materials.  

How many people will it take to get the job done? 

This is an important factor simply because it is good to know how many people will be in your home during the duration of this project. Knowing this information is true for your safety and comfort. Ask your installer this question before they get started so you will be prepared.
