Typically, when looking at shutters for your home, the most popular material is wood. However, while wood shutters are the gold standard within the industry, there are advantages to using synthetic materials like polypropylene or vinyl.

At Starwood Distributors, we offer a wide array of poly-vinyl shutters to suit your needs. Not only are these products practical, but they provide excellent design options to fit your style.

How Poly-Vinyl Differs From Wood

When looking at poly shutters, you’ll notice that many of them have the appearance of wood. Since wood grain can be so appealing, many manufacturers add it to the plastic or vinyl material to make it look more natural. So, even though you’re choosing a synthetic shutter, you still get the same aesthetic as 100-percent wood varieties.

While the appearance of poly and wood shutters is similar, there are some crucial differences to keep in mind. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Better Insulation

Even if you choose a hardwood for your shutters, it’s still more absorbent than synthetic material. Because poly-vinyl is not porous, it reflects heat into the room. So, if you’re trying to maximize your heating efficiency, a set of poly shutters will do the job better than wood.

Easier to Clean

Over time, wood requires upkeep and maintenance to ensure that it stays resilient. If you don’t treat the wood and clean it regularly, it will start to rot or get some discoloration. Also, since wood is somewhat porous, it can stain easier than synthetics.

When it comes to cleaning, poly-vinyl shutters are the most comfortable option. In most cases, all you have to do is wipe them down with a damp towel, and they’ll be as good as new.

That being said, cheaper varieties can get yellow over time. As sunlight gets into the vinyl, it will cause the original color to fade. So, if you do decide to install poly-vinyl shutters, we recommend buying a high-quality version.

More Color and Design Options

Although wood grain does look appealing, it doesn’t offer much variety. Since poly-vinyl shutters are made in a factory, you have much more control over how they look. For example, if you decide against a faux-wood appearance, you can opt for solid matte colored shades. At Starwood Distributors, we make all of our shutters in-house, so we can customize yours any way that you like.

Disadvantages of Poly-Vinyl Shutters

Benefits of Shutters

While this material can work well in some situations, it’s not always the best choice. Here are some reasons why poly shutters might not be ideal for your home.

Sagging –

Since the material is heavier than wood, it can start to sag over time. To alleviate this problem, you have to install metal brackets inside each piece. However, doing this will increase the price.

Less Eco-Friendly –

Poly materials are synthetic, which means that they use chemicals and other pollutants. If you want to limit your impact on the environment, wood is a much better choice.
