A question that we get often at Starwood Distributors is regarding the best way to measure for window blinds. Truth be told, it all depends on the type of blinds you are planning on installing, but there are some universal measurement practices for window blinds that can help you get an idea for the size you need. General Tips
Always use a steel measuring tape when measuring for window treatments – it will make your life much easier and you will get the most accurate reading. Measure to the nearest ⅛ inch – because blind measurements must be precise, it is crucial to never round your measurements to a half or whole inch. When writing down your measurements, always list width first, so it will read W x H. It would be a catastrophe to mix those up. To be extra safe, you can always write a “w” or an “h” by each number.
Inside Mounts
When you are hanging blinds on your windows, you’ll need to decide between an inside or outside mount. Both offer different benefits and additional considerations when it comes to installation. Inside mounts will be put directly inside the window casing, whereas outside mounts will be on the outside of them. With inside mounts, you’ll need to measure the width in three places: the top, the middle, and the bottom. For the height, measure the left, middle, and right side. Also take note of the window depth to meet installation requirements.
Outside Mounts
When measuring for outside mounts, you need to take care of the whole area that will be covered. Keep in mind that for the best control of light and privacy, add an extra three inches to the height and width. There needs to be two inches, at the very least, of a flat surface to be able to properly hang the mount. The decision between inside mounts and outside mounts is entirely your choice, but know that outside mounts tend to be a little more straightforward.
